Fix the source image before trusting the extracted chat text.

When OCR looks wrong, compare the message with its screenshot first. Sharp uncropped images, correct reading order, visible headers and dates, and deliberate overlap solve more problems than editing the final PDF.

Wrong charactersIncrease source clarity, remove zoom blur, and recapture tiny or low-contrast text.

Do not silently correct a disputed passage

If exact wording matters, keep the extracted text as a working aid and point back to the source image. Record any manual correction separately. OCR confidence is not proof of authorship, completeness, or authenticity, and a polished output can make an error harder to notice if the reviewer never sees the source.

Escalate the right problem

  • If the pixels are unreadable, recapture the source.
  • If pixels are clear but extraction is wrong, retain a sample and report the app, language, theme, and device.
  • If sender attribution is uncertain, add more conversation-header and neighboring-message context.
  • If chronology is uncertain, return to the original thread and rebuild the capture boundaries.
  • If the source itself is disputed, stop editing and ask the recipient what collection process is required.
