Use neutral categories

Schedule. Proposed times, confirmations, changes, and missed handoffs.

Child needs. School, health, activities, medication, or travel discussed in the messages.

Follow-up. Requests, responses, agreements, and unresolved points.

A neutral category is easier to review than a folder titled with a conclusion. Let the source show the words and dates; keep your interpretation in separate notes.

Protect children and unrelated people

Custody messages can contain medical details, addresses, school information, financial data, and conversations involving children or third parties. Follow counsel’s instructions about scope, redaction, storage, and sharing. Do not publish or broadly distribute the export. TextTrace is an organization tool, not a substitute for professional privacy and safety advice.

Preserve context and uncertainty

Include enough messages before and after a selected passage to explain the exchange. Check OCR, participant labels, and visible dates against the source. A screen name or contact label does not independently prove identity. TextTrace does not perform forensic acquisition, establish custody facts, or guarantee that a court will admit an export.

Frequently asked questions

Can TextTrace decide which custody messages matter?

No. It helps search and organize selected messages. Relevance and legal strategy should come from your qualified attorney.

Should I share the PDF with the other parent?

Follow your attorney’s and the court’s instructions. Custody records can contain sensitive information that should be transferred only through an approved channel.
