WhatsApp TXT · Dates and time zones

Treat a WhatsApp timestamp as displayed source data, not universal time.

WhatsApp exports can use locale-dependent date formats and may not state a time-zone offset on every message line. Preserve the original TXT, record the phone’s locale and time-zone context, and verify important dates against the conversation.

Resolve ambiguity before filtering

A line such as 04/05/2026 is ambiguous without locale context. Find a message where one component must be greater than 12, compare it with the phone display, or use a known event to determine the order. Do this before applying date filters or sorting a CSV; otherwise a clean spreadsheet can still represent the wrong chronology.

Build a timestamp note

LocaleLanguage and region used when the export was created.
Time zoneThe device location or setting relevant to the displayed times.
TransitionsTravel, daylight-saving changes, and device clock corrections that may affect interpretation.
Boundary checkFirst and last requested messages confirmed against the source conversation.

How TextTrace handles the boundary

TextTrace reads timestamps present in a supported transcript and lets you search by visible dates. It does not infer hidden server time, prove the sender’s location, or make an ambiguous source timestamp authoritative. Keep the source and a short note describing the date convention used for review.

Questions, answered precisely

Frequently asked questions

Does a WhatsApp TXT include a time-zone offset?

Do not assume it does. Review the actual export and document the phone’s locale and time-zone context separately.

Can TextTrace prove when a message was sent?

No. It organizes timestamp text present in the selected source. Independent timing or authorship questions require other evidence and qualified review.
