If WhatsApp’s Export Chat option is missing, check privacy first.

Open the individual or group conversation, tap its name, and look for Export Chat in Chat Info. If it is absent, Advanced Chat Privacy may be blocking exports; WhatsApp documents that behavior. Do not change a sensitive chat’s privacy setting without the participants’ agreement.

Use this diagnosis order

  1. Confirm the menu. Export Chat is a per-conversation action, not a global backup command.
  2. Check privacy. WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy documentation says the setting prevents exporting that chat.
  3. Check versions. Update WhatsApp and iOS, reopen the conversation, and check again.
  4. Respect the boundary. A missing option may be intentional. Do not work around a privacy control for content you are not authorized to copy.

If you are permitted to retain the conversation but Export Chat is unavailable, capture only the relevant period. Show the conversation name, reveal timestamps where possible, scroll slowly, and keep overlap between captures.
