WhatsApp troubleshooting · Large exports

When a WhatsApp export is too large, separate the transcript from the media problem.

Start with a Without Media export. It gives you the transcript path with far less transfer overhead. Then preserve important attachments separately or retry Include Media with enough local storage and a destination that accepts the package.

Do not plan around a folklore message limit

WhatsApp’s current help page explains Export Chat and says a media export includes the most recent media, but it does not publish the fixed message caps often repeated by third-party articles. Treat those numbers as unverified. The reliable check is the source you actually received: file contents, first and last visible timestamps, sample messages, and requested attachments.

Follow the current WhatsApp export instructions, then validate the result instead of assuming the package is complete.

Choose a recovery path

Sharing failsSave to Files first. A mail or messaging destination may reject a package that the phone can still create.
ZIP never appearsConfirm free storage, update WhatsApp, restart the app, and retry without media to isolate the cause.
Text is the priorityUse Without Media, preserve the TXT, and create a readable PDF or CSV from that transcript.
Attachments are requiredList the specific files needed and verify each one; no converter can reconstruct an absent attachment.

Completion checklist

  • Record the chat name and participants.
  • Compare the transcript’s first and last visible dates with the requested period.
  • Search several distinctive phrases from early, middle, and late in the chat.
  • Open each important attachment or document.
  • Keep the unchanged TXT or ZIP beside any PDF, CSV, or TXT working output.

Questions, answered precisely

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose Without Media for a very long chat?

It is the best diagnostic first step when transcript text is the priority. If media is in scope, preserve or retry those files separately and document what is missing.

Does a successful ZIP prove the export is complete?

No. Inspect its date boundaries, transcript samples, and required attachments. WhatsApp controls what it includes.
