Before you start
TextTrace cannot add messages or attachments that WhatsApp leaves out of the export. A TXT contains the transcript; a ZIP can contain the transcript plus media selected and included by WhatsApp.
On iPhone
- Open the conversation in WhatsApp.
- Open the chat information screen and choose Export Chat.
- Choose whether to attach media.
- Save or share the resulting TXT or ZIP to TextTrace.
- Review parsed participants, dates, messages, and mapped attachments.
After import
Search the record, compare important passages with the retained TXT or ZIP, and choose the export format for the next task. Keep the source and checksum sidecar with any shared output.

Frequently asked questions
Does including media guarantee every attachment is present?
No. WhatsApp controls what it includes and may limit exports. Check the resulting ZIP and the imported record.
Does TextTrace bypass encrypted iPhone backups?
No. The Mac importer reads only unencrypted Finder or iTunes backups. TextTrace does not bypass backup encryption.
Does a checksum make an export legally admissible?
No. A SHA-256 checksum can help you check whether a file changed. It does not establish authenticity, completeness, admissibility, or legal sufficiency.
