Chat export formats · Decision guide
Choose PDF for reading. Choose CSV for working.
Available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.
Use the format that matches the task
Understand what can be lost
A CSV is powerful but visually plain. Bubble position, page flow, and some attachment presentation do not look like the original chat. A PDF is easier to read but less convenient for calculation and bulk filtering. Neither format proves identity, completeness, or authenticity on its own. Those questions depend on the source and collection process.
Validate the export
- Open the first and last message.
- Search a distinctive phrase.
- Check at least one message from each important participant.
- Verify date and time representation.
- Open or locate a critical attachment.
If the recipient uses a specialist review platform, ask whether HTML, TXT, PNG, or RSMF 2.0 is required instead.
Questions, answered precisely
Frequently asked questions
Is PDF better for court or an attorney?
It is often easier to read and reference, but the required format and admissibility rules vary. Ask the attorney or recipient what they need.
Can I open TextTrace CSV in Excel?
A standard CSV can be opened by common spreadsheet tools. Review character encoding, dates, line breaks, and attachments after opening because spreadsheet behavior can vary.
